🎉 You're ready to launch. This guide will walk you through every step. We recommend starting with Step 1 below and working through the 30/60/90 Quick Start alongside it. Consider becoming a Launch Partner for coaching from an IFI representative.
📖 You are Just Getting Started, We can Help you take the next steps.
Start with one or two of the items above, then keep moving through the guide. You do not need to solve everything at once.

    Your Toolkit

    4 Guides. One Toolkit.

Start with this guide. Open the others when you need them.

    The Launch Sequence

10 Steps to a Thriving ISM

Work at your own pace. Some steps take days, others take weeks.

    Step 1

    Build Your Core Team

Your ministry will only go as far as your people. Assign a name to each role, save it here, then download your team notes when you are ready.

    🏆
    Ministry Champion
The point person. Carries the vision, coordinates volunteers, connects with IFI. 3–5 hrs/week.
    🏠
    Hospitality Lead
Coordinates events, meals, and logistics. Creates welcoming spaces.
    🤝
    Volunteer Coordinator
Recruits and schedules volunteers. Manages the friendship-pairing pipeline.
    🙏
    Prayer Captain
Mobilizes the church in prayer specifically for international students.
    🌍
    Core Volunteer 1
First-wave volunteer friend. Cross-cultural experience is a plus.
    🌏
    Core Volunteer 2
    First-wave volunteer friend.
    2
    Step 2

    Know Your Campus

Before you plan events, understand your community. Fill in what you know, then download your church notes for your team.

    3
    Step 3, Optional for DIY

    Connect with IFI

IFI exists to support churches like yours. If you downloaded the DIY toolkit, IFI will reach out via the email you provided. You can also reach out anytime.

Not required, but IFI partnership gives you coaching, campus connections, and network support that significantly accelerates your ministry. See the Launch Partner program →
    4
Step 4, Do this before Step 5

    Set Your Budget

Ministry costs money. Plan ahead, it prevents scrambling later.

    • Small church (under 100): $500–$1,500 year one
    • Medium church (100–300): $1,500–$3,500 year one
    • Large church (300+): $3,000–$5,000 year one
    • Funding: mission budget, designated giving campaign, small group sponsorships
    5
Step 5, Do this before Step 6

    Train Your Volunteers

Willing hearts need equipped hands. Complete Modules 1 & 2 before your first event. Training is video-based and self-paced.

    • Module 1: The Heart of Cross-Cultural Friendship (60 min)
    • Module 2: Cultural Intelligence Basics (60 min)
    • Module 3: Faith Conversations Across Cultures (60 min)
    • Module 4: Practical Friendship Skills (45 min)
    • Module 5: Sustainability and Self-Care (45 min)
Full Volunteer Training Guide coming soon in a future toolkit tab.
    6
    Step 6

    Plan Your First Event

Your first event sets the tone. Make it warm, low-pressure, and personal.

    • Welcome Dinner, Simple, relational, joyful. Late August or early January.
    • Practical Help, Airport rides, furniture pickup, move-in support, winter coats.
    • Cultural Exchange Dinner, Great if you already have some relationships.
💡 Personal invitations beat flyers every time. Follow up within 48 hours of every event. Collect WhatsApp contacts, this is gold for staying connected with international students.
    7
    Step 7, Ongoing

Use the 6-Phase Journey as Your Map

ISM is not a program, it's a journey. The 6-Phase Ministry Journey helps you understand where you are and what to focus on next. Click below to explore it.

⚠️ Where most churches get stuck: the gap between CONNECT and WELCOME. Events without personal follow-up produce attendance, not transformation.
    8
    Step 8, Ongoing

    Study Your Students' Backgrounds

The best ministry is informed ministry. Use the Cultural Primers tab below to open specific country guides for your team. Ask questions, listen well, and use the primers as preparation, not as stereotypes.

The golden rule: cultural knowledge is a background lens, not a label.
    9
    Step 9

    Launch and Learn

You will not do this perfectly. That's okay. After every event, debrief: What went well? Who needs follow-up? What would you do differently?

    • Did you host at least 2 events?
    • Did you make at least 10 personal connections?
    • Do you have 5+ active volunteer friendships?
    • Are students returning and bringing friends?
    10
    Step 10, Day 90+

    Report, Celebrate, and Grow

Ministry that isn't measured doesn't grow. Ministry that isn't celebrated doesn't sustain.

    • First student to attend
    • First student to return
    • First spiritual conversation
    • First student who accepted Christ
    • First student who returned home and is doing ministry in their country
💡 Ideas to celebrate: share a student story during Sunday announcements, host a volunteer appreciation dinner, create a "wall of nations" with flags of countries you've connected with.

    Common Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions every church asks.

We're a small church. Can we really do this?
Yes. Some of IFI's most effective church partners are under 100 people. International students don't need programs, they need people. A few committed volunteers can change lives.
What if students aren't interested in Christianity?
Most international students come from non-Christian backgrounds. IFI's approach is friendship first, faith naturally. Build genuine relationships. Answer questions when asked. Trust the Holy Spirit with the rest.
How do we find international students?
University campuses, international student offices, campus events at semester start, international student Facebook groups, local ESL programs, and through IFI's campus connections.
What if we make a cultural mistake?
You will. Apologize, learn, and keep going. International students are generally gracious with genuine friends who try. The Cultural Primers below will help you avoid the most common pitfalls.
How long before we see fruit?
Genuine cross-cultural friendship takes time. Expect 6–12 months before deep relationships develop. Expect 2–3 years before spiritual fruit becomes visible. Plant seeds faithfully and trust God with the harvest.
Do we have to become a formal IFI partner?
IFI partnership is encouraged but not required to use this toolkit. However, IFI partnership gives you access to coaching, campus connections, and network support that significantly accelerates your ministry.
